Year 12 VCAL student Melissa Metlika arranged for Hayes to visit the school as part of a personal development skills class.
She said teacher Bev Munro was a family relation of Hayes and helped get in contact with him.
"We started planning it in early March," she said.
Melissa, 17, said she emailed Hayes and arranged for him to visit the school as an artist in residence.
Hayes joined the school on Monday last week and finished yesterday.
During his time at the school he painted two murals and worked with students on their art.
Melissa said Hayes used aerosol paint to create the murals.
"We got the spray paint from a company Brett's used before,'' she said. "I've organised everything and for all the school kids to come and help paint.''
Hayes said he painted a marine mural with junior students and also taught them acrylic painting.
He said he taught the senior students oil painting and created a landscape mural with them.
Hayes said he had been involved in student projects before.
"I just enjoy passing on my skills to the students,'' he said.
"It was a great opportunity to come down and teach aerosol art to the country and show them art can be done in that way.''
