COUNCILS across the region are calling for candidates with a strong sense of civic duty to nominate for October’s councillor elections.

Horsham council will run a community and candidate information session on Thursday from 6.30pm at Horsham Civic Centre for people who might consider standing for election to council in October.
Horsham council chief executive Peter Brown said the information session would outline the roles and responsibilities of a councillor, describe the election process, and provide useful advice for getting elected.
“Even if you haven’t really decided whether becoming a councillor is for you, it’s a great opportunity to come along, meet people who have been there and learn more about what’s involved,” he said.
Northern Grampians Shire’s council elections, like most others, will be held on October 22 and seven councillor positions across four wards will be contested.
Kara Kara ward will be represented by two councillors, south west ward by one councillor, central ward by one councillor and Stawell ward by three councillors.
All council elections will be run by the Victorian Electoral Commission and ballots will be collected by postal vote.
Voting is compulsory for ratepayers and you may be fined if you do not vote.

Ararat Rural City Council will hold an election information session on August 10.
The information session for prospective candidates in the general elections for Ararat Rural City Council will be held on Wednesday, August 10 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the council chambers.
Speakers from neighbouring councils and the Municipal Association of Victoria will provide information about the council area, advice on who can nominate, how to nominate, and what is required of a councillor.
The presentation will cover a range of topics, including public expectations, time commitments, challenges and rewards.
West Wimmera Shire Council will host three public information sessions for residents considering standing for Council in the upcoming elections.
Information sessions for prospective candidates in the general elections for West Wimmera council will be held in Edenhope on July 27, Goroke on July 28 and Kaniva on July 29.
All sessions will commence at 5:00pm.
West Wimmera chief executive David Leahy will host the information sessions, which will include speakers from neighbouring councils and presentations by the Shire’s two General Managers.
Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in open discussion and ask questions.
