About 20 girls were at Horsham City Oval to be put through their paces by Terry Arnel.
Arnel was pleased with the turnout on the night.
“There’s our first team,” he said.
“This is just the first night where we’re trying to establish what interest there is.
“Twenty on the first night might turn into 40 next week if each one of these girls goes to their best friend to tell them about it.”
Arnel said the club targeted those girls who might have played Auskick when they were younger but had nowhere in the area to play as they got older.
“There are women’s competitions out there, just not in this area,” he said.
“For some of the girls, the only thing they might have done is school footy.
“We’re starting from the bottom, which is good.”
The sessions are largely focused on technique in order to establish good habits.
Arnel thought the AFL establishing a women’s league this season would help generate higher interest levels.
“Anything related to women’s footy in our area is going to be easier to be conceived out of existing clubs,” he said.
“That’s why we are keen to start something off for them.”
Two more sessions will run on Tuesday and again on August 2 at Horsham City Oval from 4.30pm.
