More than 2500 schools across Australia dug in and muddied up for Planet Ark’s National School Tree Day ahead of National Tree Day on Sunday. 

Roberts Avenue Kindergarten teacher Melissa Spiller said the day was a great chance to teach children about nature, while bettering the kindergarten’s yard.

She said kindergarteners assisted in planting two eucalyptus trees, pansies and violas. 

“It’s about sustainability and the environment,” she said. 

“But it also teaches children to be respectful of our little community and the environment, and helps them work in teams. 

Mrs Spiller said the children worked together to de-pot, fertilise and plant the trees. 

“It’s all communication and collaboration,” she said. 

“The children can participate if they want to help.

“There will be ongoing maintenance down the road that teaches them to be responsible and look after the plant. 

“We hope the native plants invite insects and bird into the yard.

“It won’t be enormous but it makes an impact”
