Yarriambiack council’s youth community engagement officer Murray McKenzie said the event would foster musical talent in the region.
“We’re hoping to give local performers an opportunity to get up and perform in front of a crowd,” he said.
“It’s about the development process for young performers, singers and musicians.”
The August 19 event is open to bands, duos and solo artists across the Wimmera.
Mr McKenzie said while it was aimed at teenagers, bands with some members outside that bracket would be welcome.
He said in a region where live underage venues were few and far between, the night offered a rare chance for young people to express themselves creatively.
“Young musicians need a pathway and Battle of the Bands provides that opportunity for them to get experience,” he said.
“Our society and community out here are certainly heavily reliant on sports programs.
“This gives people who maybe aren’t that into sports the ultimate opportunity to express themselves and hopefully find success in another field.”
Mr McKenzie said even for those who were not musically inclined, the night provided an opportunity to immerse yourself in live music.
The council has partnered with Nexus Horsham and the Yarriambiack Freeze Committee Ramp It Up Rage It Stage.
“It’s great to have them on board for the first ever night in Murtoa,” Mr McKenzie said.
Winners of the competition could win a support show with Sisters Doll.
“It’s fantastic,” Mr McKenzie said
“We’re very lucky, they’re great and finished in the top five of Australia’s Got Talent.”
Mr McKenzie said the competition was free to enter and open to bands across the Wimmera.
He said the regional final would also be at Murtoa in October.
With no battle event happening in Horsham this year, Mr McKenzie said he hoped all young bands, duos and solo artists supported the Murtoa event.
He said more information could be found at www.murtoa.net/bigweekend or by contacting Yarriambiack Shire Council.
