Gold mine representatives met union and government representatives yesterday to discuss the way forward as the mine scales down its operations.
The mine’s underground operations are due to be wrapped up by the end of next year.
Stawell Gold Mine general manager Troy Cole said the meeting in Stawell Town Hall involved mine staff, Northern Grampians Shire Council, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union and Victorian Opposition.
He said the discussion focused on redundancy aspects, assistance available to employees and strategic planning considerations.
“We are in the middle of a redundancy phase at the moment which will see 47 employees leave the mine by the end of October,” he said.
“There will be another 100 in early 2013.
“These are fairly signifi cant movements of employees as we downsize our operations.”
Mr Cole said the meeting looked at opportunities for staff, such as fly-in fly-out work and the assistance available to them through services such as Centrelink.
“One of the things the State Government, the mine and council are looking at is the establishment of air services,” he said.
“There was nothing specific in detail – it was a chance for all four parties to brief each other.
“Everyone is working together.
‘‘I don’t see any adverse activity at all.
“The workforce is generally taking it on board in good spirit but we’ve all got something to do to make it easier for people.”
