He will replace the departing Shayne Breuer who will step away from the role after the finals series to spend more time with family.
Saints football director Roger Sordello said the club would have preferred to announce the appointment once finals had wound up.
“We weren’t too happy about the way it came out but once it did we wanted to be honest with the players,” he said.
“Obviously our focus and Donald’s focus right now is still on finals.”
Fisher is currently in his second season coaching Donald in the North Central Football League.
During his coaching tenure, the Royal Blues have risen from finishing last on the ladder in 2014 without a win to become one of the top sides competing for the flag.
The Saints are still in the race for the 2016 premiership as the side looks to defend its 2015 flag.
Breuer has been coaching the club since 2014 after moving across from Kalkee.
