Keep Victoria Beautiful has announced the finalists for the 2016 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards and Horsham has finalists in nine of the 11 categories.
The Tidy Town Sustainable Community awards were designed to encourage, motivate and celebrate sustainability achievements of rural and regional communities across Australia.
The finalists in each category are:
- Active Schools Category: Horsham Lutheran School for their ‘Community Gardening Initiative’
- Clean Beach/Waterway Category: Horsham College Students Noah Talbot, Brittany Baker, Mitch Moore and Darcy Carter for ‘Making Green Lake's Beaches Better’
- Community Action Leadership (population above 3,000) Category: Horsham Town Hall Fundraising Committee for the ‘NUTBUSH Horsham World Record Attempt’
- Community Action Leadership (population above 3,000) Category: Wimmera Health Care Group, Goolum Goolum Aboriginal Co-op, Grampians Community Health, Wimmera Sports Assembly, Wimmera Uniting Care for the ‘Northfest Family Fun Festival’
- Community Government Partnerships Category: Wimmera Primary Care Partnership, Volunteering Western Victoria, Horsham Rural City Council and volunteers for the ‘Horsham Men's Shed’
- Environmental Sustainability category: Horsham Urban Landcare Group volunteers for ‘Increasing Heritage Skills through Holistic Workshops’
- Litter Prevention Category: Horsham Fishing Competition Incorporated Committee for the ‘Horsham Fishing Competition’
- Protection of the Environment Category: Landcare, Wimmera CMA, Barengi Gadjin Land Council, Horsham Schools, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Wimmera Regional Library Corp, Art is…festival for ‘Fostering future environmental leaders in the Horsham community’
- Resource Recovery and Waste Management Category: Volunteers of HCEFC, Horsham Traders for Food Donations, Horsham Transport Carriers for the ‘Horsham Christian Emergency Food Centre (HCEFC)’
Horsham Tidy Town chairperson Gillian Vanderwaal said the committee was thrilled with how well Horsham had done to reach the finals in so many categories
“It’s a testament to the wonderful work, energy and achievements occurring in our municipality,” she said.
“We are also pleased to announce that young leader Dalton Cross is a finalist in the category of Group or Individual aged 30 years or under and Horsham is once again in the running with nine other towns to win the state award - Victoria’s Tidiest Town.
"Congratulations to all the 2016 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities finalists.”
Ms Vanderwaal said there were outstanding applications in all categories for the awards program.
Keep Victoria Beautiful chairman Dick Gross said the organisation was looking forward to celebrating with all the amazing volunteers at the awards ceremony on October, 15 2016 in Horsham.
