The triumph and tragedy. The fulfilment of dreams and the completion of years of work. Some will feel their potential has been fulfilled. While others have been left feeling disappointed. This is the Olympic Games in Rio. Thousands of athletes put under the spotlight of their own expectations and the expectations of their nations. I have enjoyed being able to watch some of the events, admiring the commitment and sacrifice of the athletes. I have also been more aware than at any other time in my life of the tensions that exist.

The build up to the Olympics seemed to be littered with concerns about ‘terror attacks’ and zika virus. I have heard stories of a wall being built so that people wouldn’t see the ghetto areas. I read a report that said there would be $340 million of public funds put into those competing in Rio. There are already reports that we will spend more money trying to find out why we didn’t win more medals! I have also seen a series of photos taken of abandoned Olympic venues. It’s been interesting to see how quickly our asylum detention centres have been removed from the front pages. I’m not against sports or celebrating champions. I am reminded of my own challenges and priorities. I am reminded at how easily I forget about those who are less fortunate or about the value I place on things that might only last a short time. We invest in what we value don’t we?
When Jesus started in his ministry, he began by encouraging people to consider what they devoted their lives to, what was it that would take their time and energy? “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
If the Olympics teaches us anything, it is that we give poor attention to what we set our focus on. Maybe another way to put it is to ask, what has the attention of my heart? What are you giving your life to?
