Mayor Debra Nelson said the shire was delighted to secure Mr Wood for the role.
She said the quality applicants were a credit to the shire.
“We had several very high quality applicants for our chief executive role and we were absolutely delighted with the calibre of people who wanted to join our team at Hindmarsh,” she said.
“Greg, however, was our clear, standout choice.”
Mr Wood has more than 13 years’ executive and management experience in local government.
His most recent position was as community services and emergency management director at the City of Casey.
Cr Nelson said Mr Wood had a strong reputation for delivery quality services to the community, and had previously been responsible for budgets and managing large numbers of staff.
She said the depth of Mr Wood’s experience would be a great asset to Hindmarsh Shire.
“He is a very experienced person who will be able to guide our organisation through the challenging times ahead in local government,” she said.
Mr Wood said he was thrilled to start his five-year term on September 12.
"I'm excited at the opportunity that this appointment presents,” he said.
“My aim is to build on the considerable strengths of Hindmarsh Shire Council in supporting the needs and aspirations of the people of Hindmarsh.
“I am also looking forward to becoming part of a great community.”
