THE Southern Mallee Giants secured its grand final spot after recording a 92-point victory against Jeparit-Rainbow at Quantong on Saturday.
Both sides were strong out of the gates as a tight tussle kicked off.
It was a relatively even contest until the Giants accelerated its lead in the second quarter.
The third quarter saw the Storm drop behind and struggle to find pressure to combat the robust Giants.
The Storm did its best to play catch up but the Giants were just too strong, cementing its 22.15(147)-8.7(55) win.
Giants coach Geoff Burdett said his side was stoked with the win.
“It was great to do it that way, at least we know we are in the grand final,” he said.
“I know it is another game when we get there but we are pretty stoked.
“From a club point of view it is great to have two sides in with the reserves and the seniors.
“Hopefully we can show our real form on the ground on grand final day.”
The Storm will now fight for a grand final spot in next week’s preliminary final.
Storm coach Mark Cocks said he was disappointed with the result.
“Our disposal really hurt us. We were a little bit lazy in defending when the Giants had the ball,” he said.
“We gave them a little bit too much open space out wide and they really hurt us.
“Our ball use really hurt us after quarter time. We were really good for the first quarter and it was a nice even contest.
“We fumbled the ball way too much and the Giants ran away a lot easier than what we did.”
Burdett said his side had a slow start.
“We were probably a little bit slow off the mark early on but once we settled down I thought we really stuck to our guns with the intensity,” he said.
“We lifted our intensity and our work rate which made a hell of a difference.
“They really work hard as a team, everyone did their job, so it was great.”
Giants’ Luke Mahony was a standout, working hard on ball, as well as Haydn Drew and Brock Orval.
“I said before today, what we’ve done all year has worked, so we don’t need to change things we just have to keep it as is,” Burdett said.
“The intensity is our central point.
“Obviously watching you can see how hard we run and overlap, that was a great positive for us and has been for the last few weeks.
“Since the Edenhope-Apsley game we’ve really worked hard at that sort of stuff and the hardness at the ball.”
Giants’ Brock Orval and Jackson Fisher put four goals on the board.
Luke Mahony, Kain Robins and Dale Shannon kicked three goals for the side.
Fabian Dorbolo and Samuel Weddell managed a goal each.
Nathan Cocks and Ashley Clugston kicked two goals for the Storm, while Justin Cozens, Samuel Cranna, Sean Bayzand and Luke Murphy kicked one goal each.
Storm full back James Mulligan did an outstanding job against Kain Robins for the first half before moving to the ruck.
Samuel Cranna was another strong player for his work in the ruck, as well as Luke Werner in the back pocket.
Storm’s Luke Murphy will miss next week’s final after suffering a hamstring injury.
“We really need to clean up the way we use the ball,” Cocks said.
“Our disposal really let us down today and we couldn’t hit our targets. We really need to hit them next week.
“We also need better decision making as our decisions were pretty ordinary.
“Our accountability as well, we weren’t willing to go and pick up our opposition players quickly enough.
“Like I said to the boys though, there is a lot of worse things going on in the world than a losing a game of football.
“We were lucky to have finished second, you get the double chance so I just hope we can make use of it next week.”
