Victoria's Sheriff's Office has received several reports about the scam, whereby fraudsters claim to be either the Victorian government or the NSW Office of State Revenue.

A copy of the scam email reads: "The offence was detected by a certified measuring device and recorded by an approved camera recording device (within the meaning of the Road Transport Act 2014).

"You can find out this traffic violation data and camera recorded images in the attached document.

"If you do not pay or finalise your penalty notice by the due date, we will send you a penalty reminder notice giving you a further 28 days to pay or finalise the fine."

No names or addresses are written on the fake fines, but a fake penalty notice number is given.

The state's sheriff Brendan Facey said Victoria Police never issued fines by email.

"They are only issued on-the-spot, or by post," he said.

"It is alarming to think scammers would be this desperate for money."

Victoria Police is investigating the scam, which is designed to dupe motorists into revealing their personal banking details by paying the fine.

It's not yet known how many Victorians have been sent fake fines, or whether anyone has handed over their bank details.

"A number of similar scams have operated in the past 18 months, however, we suspect this particular scam is targeting motorists across Australia," Mr Facey said.

"If anyone receives a suspicious fine via email we advise you delete the correspondence immediately."
