I’m just about to wrap up my first year at Longerenong College before returning for my final year to study an Diploma of Agronomy.
I always knew I would be involved in agriculture throughout my life but studied aged care while still at school and worked at a hospital until I was certain agronomy was the career I wanted to pursue.
Over the past year at Longy, one of the biggest perks of living on campus is being surrounded by so many like-minded young people from all different regions and farming backgrounds.
The mix of in-class time and hands-on work keeps us engaged and reminds us how important it is to understand the theory behind the practical.
For a lot of students, working on the farm back home is something we all miss and while being stuck inside we do get assignments done, for a bunch of kids who grew up outdoors it’s not long before we all get cabin fever.
So things like shearing week get us out working and remind us all of why we are here and what we want to achieve in the long run.
After Longy I hope to find a graduate position as an agronomist, travel to remote farming areas to work closely with rural communities, before possibly moving into research and development of crops and pastures.
