The man was arrested in April and charged in relation to the death of a toddler in September last year.
The Mail Times has chosen not to name the accused due to legal reasons.
On Wednesday he pleaded guilty to one charge of killing a child under Section 5A of the Crimes Act.
The act states, a person who, by his or her conduct, kills a child who is under the age of six years in circumstances that would constitute manslaughter is guilty of child homicide, and not of manslaughter.
A charge of murder was struck out by the magistrate during Wednesday’s committal hearing.
Under the act, the man faces a maximum period of 20 years imprisonment.
The accused appeared in court via videolink and did not apply for bail.
The magistrate ordered the accused to appear in the Supreme Court for a directions hearing on September 28 at 9.30am.
