The sun is set to appear just in time for the first bounce, with the mercury forecast to hit 18 degrees. Light winds will come from the west.
The state's west is tipped to receive up to 60 millimetres of rain across Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, while up to 100 millimetres is expected to be dumped on the north-east.
Melburnians will be treated to a dose of sunshine on Wednesday, but the weather is set to turn by midnight.
A light sprinkling of rain, up to 10 millimetres, is predicted to fall on Wednesday evening.
The Bureau of Meteorology says showers will continue over the following two days, but Friday - the day of the grand final parade - will have "significantly" less rainfall than Thursday.
Senior forecaster Keris Arndt says the showers are set to ease just in time for the grand final clash between the Western Bulldogs and Sydney Swans on Saturday afternoon.
This will be welcomed by the more than 90,00 footy fans set to pour into the MCG for Saturday's game.
"Showers will contract to the east of the state and will be much lighter," Ms Arndt said.
"Melbourne could get a shower in the morning, but it will likely clear up by the afternoon."
