Volleyball Horsham’s David Berry is a the championship coach at the Victorian Gold under-15 girls side and said the standard across the board is outstanding.
“It is fantastic to see the juniors competing on this stage,” he said.
Jayden McQueen has been playing tough opposition with the under-19 Victoria White men’s side.
The team registered two wins and four looses through the first three days.
“The side is playing a lot of close games and Jayden is doing well,” Berry said.
“I’ve never heard of anyone hitting at a 94 kill percentage but he was at that level against Queensland Marroon. At one point there was three blockers against him and he still got through.”
Chloe Brown has also had mixed results playing for the women’s under-19 Victoria White side that won two of its first six games.
“Chloe is getting a bit of court time because she is her side’s tenth player,” Berry said.
“Her team had a close loss yesterday which put it out of medal contention.”
The under-17 side featuring Jordan Weidemann started well on Monday with a 3-1 win against NSW but has since failed to register a win.
The first two days were difficult for Eadie Garth-Lindsay’s under-17 Victoria Gold side but it managed to register its first win of the week against WA on Wednesday.
“The team has had a lot of close losses,” Berry said.
“That’s what you expect with a lot of the development teams at this level.”
The under-15 boys featuring Will Brennan, Will Saligari, John Kearns, Otto Maroske, Alex Baker and Aiden O’Connor, led by Tim Popple, won its first game 3-0 against ACT on Monday.
The side has gone on to win one of its next six games.
“That’s pretty good,” Berry said. “Its about what we anticipated. The side has been very competitive but it lacks some big hitters.”
Cleo Baker and Laelah Robertson’s under-15 side has been going well under the guidance of Berry and assistant coach Kara Johnston.
The side lost its first two games but managed wins in the next two.
Berry said a 3-0 win against NSW Navy on Thursday afternoon could allow the side to sneak into second ahead of the crossover finals.
“We had two really good wins yesterday and we’re well in the mix for medals,” he said.
“A straight set win on Thursday would have us in with a chance of playing in the gold medal match.”
