Mr Ackland said, from Friday, Skillinvest’s current chief financial officer Darren Webster would replace him in the executive position.
Mr Ackland said he had enjoyed a long and successful journey with Skillinvest and was looking forward to seeing what the business could achieve under Mr Webster.
“A CEO is only as good as the people working with them and I have worked with so many dedicated and inspirational people over the years,” he said.
“I am confident that Skillinvest is in capable hands with an experienced and passionate new leader and team.”
Mr Ackland was at the forefront of many innovative programs, working with the government, professional associations, schools, community and not-for-profit organisations.
He began his career in 1986 as the sole employee and manager of the Wimmera and Grampians Group Training Company.
Mr Webster said Mr Ackland played a leading role in the development and growth of Skillinvest, employing more than 2800 apprentices and trainees in regional areas.
“John is well known and respected throughout the industry, local community and by all levels of government and his passion for developing skills in our youth is as strong now as it was 30 years ago,” Mr Webster said.
“His legacy and vision will continue to drive the organisation and I’m looking forward to taking Skillinvest to further success in the future.
Mr Webster said Skillinvest now had six offices across Victoria and programs including corporate partnerships as well as initiatives for underprivileged groups and bringing international students to study at Longerenong College.
