Coach and association president Nicole Lakin said her side surprised her with how well it did.
“I shouldn’t doubt my girls but a lot of them are bottom age,” she said. “All I was asking of them was to see how well they bonded. We had only trained together three or four times before going.”
The side won all three of its pool games before defeating Bendigo Braves Yellow 43-10 in the final.
“I didn’t think we were at this level yet,” Lakin said.
“I would have been happy winning one or two games so not dropping a game was a great result. Every game they improved and in the end the team achieved more than we expected.”
Lakin said she would be looking for the side to continue improving during the season. The next opportunity to impress will be at the Horsham tournament in November.
