Both the men’s and women’s sides are out to continue unbeaten starts to the season with games against Millicent Magic on Saturday and Mt Gambier on Sunday.
Hornets
COACH Cam Bruce said his team would head into the weekend confident in its ability to win, but was wary of the difficulty ahead.
“Playing two games in a weekend is difficult, especially being away,” he said.
“We’ll have to manage minutes well.” Bruce said the side was sore and flat at training on Tuesday night but that was to be expected.
“These are the toughest and most testing weeks with two double-headers in a row,” he said.
“We just have to stick together and if we can come through these one four and zip it would be a great result.
The Magic has one win and two losses to its name, but is new to the competition, meaning it is still a bit of an unknown.
“As with any team we will be wary of them,” Bruce said.
“Mt Gambier is usually one of the teams to beat so we know they will be a huge challenge on Sunday.”
The side will be without Brett Goodgame and Josh Grover for the weekend’s games. Damien Skurrie is unavailable for Saturday’s game but Bruce said he was a chance to return on Sunday.
Lady Hornets
BY the end of the weekend, coach Gareth Hiscock expects his side to have a much better idea of where it stands. Like the Lady Hornets, the Magic has secured three wins to start the season, but the team is an unknown to the Horsham side.
“I know a few of the girls through other competitions,” Hiscock said.
“They will be a well-drilled and quick side, but I’m not sure how tall they are.
“Mt Gambier also has a few new players, so everyone is sort of still feeling each other out at this point.
“This time of year it’s all about out own structures more than the opposition though.”
The side had a lighter week at training due to a double-header last weekend, but Hiscock knows his team’s fitness levels are high.
“We’ve also got good depth,” he said. “That gives us a bit of an advantage with rotations as well.”
Early in the season the side is still at full strength. The men and women have a bye the following round.
