The tree was officially launched on Wednesday with cake, presents and a performance from Horsham’s Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars playgroup.
Horsham Mayor Pam Clarke said Christmas was all about giving generously.
“This is the largest gift giving appeal in Australia and all the presents are distributed by the Salvation Army,” she said.
“It’s important to remember to give presents for teenagers, as well as children.
“We also need to make sure we buy presents for boys, because they do miss out.
“It’s easy to buy little girl gifts and I know boys can be more difficult to buy for, but gift vouchers are a really good idea for teenagers.”
Cr Clarke said people could also donate money.
“That money will then be balanced out and go to people who don’t have as many presents under the tree,” she said.
Cr Clarke encouraged people to give generously to the cause.
Salvation Army Horsham Major Diane Romari said she saw the other side to the appeal.
“We see people come and get presents for their children that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford,” she said.
“Last year we gave away more than 700 toys,” she said.
“We are so blessed and I thank the community for their generosity.”
Kmart Horsham’s Suzanne Puls said last year 998 presents were donated at the store.
“We want to reach 1000 this year,” she said.
