Jahryn, 8, started growing his hair in May to raise money for Cancer Council Victoria.
It comes after his grandmother Bev Martin died from breast cancer in July, 2014 and his grandfather Brian Martin died from stomach cancer in November.
Jahryn’s mum Kellie Martin said one day Jahryn was asking why Geelong footballer Jimmy Bartel was growing his hair and beard.
“I explained that he was growing it to raise money and he said he wanted to do that,” she said.
Ms Martin said her parents’ death had been difficult on their family.
“We are still struggling with it,” she said. “We saw this fundraiser as a good way to put things in a different perspective.”
Jahryn will grow his hair until March. He is also selling reindeer food as his school to raise extra money.
After Christmas he hopes to raise more money by asking people to guess how many lollies are in a jar.
Ms Martin said it was great to see young children getting behind good causes.
“Jahryn talks to his friends about it and one of his friends donated her pocket money,” Ms Martin said.
Jahryn said he loved his grandparents very much.
“I want to help doctors find a cure for cancer,” he said.
Ms Martin said people could donate online at my-own-way-2016.everydayhero.com/au/jarhyn-mcgrath.
