Sheep Hills silos painted as part of Silo Art Trail | Photos, Videos

A GIANT mural dedicated to Indigenous culture and knowledge is taking centre stage at Sheep Hills.

International artist Adnate has been painting the latest GrainCorp silo as part of the Yarriambiack Shire Silo Art Trail.

Sheep Hills is the third silo to be painted, following Brim and Patchewollock.

Adnate worked with the Barengi Gadlin Land Council to create the design.

It features Wimmera Elders Ron Marks and Regina Hood, along with a young boy and a young girl.

Adnate started painting last week.

“I’m starting to make my way up the mountain so to speak,” he said.

“The mural is about passing culture and knowledge from generation to generation, especially with Aboriginal culture.

“It features two Elders and a young boy and a young girl and it is set in the night sky.

“I wanted to highlight and celebrate these young people and the significant connection they share with their Elders.

“The Sheep Hills silo mural is the largest work I’ve ever created.

“To do it in such a special place and with such an extraordinary group of people is humbling.”

Adnate said his art often featured Aboriginal people along with other cultures.

“It’s my main body of work and since I am Australian, I wanted to make the mural about Indigenous Australians,” he said.

The mural should be finished in mid-December.

“I thought I would get it done in two weeks, but I’m going to have to come back for a week in December to finish,” Adnate said.

He said the community had been supportive of the project.

Yarriambiack Mayor Graeme Massey said the mural looked terrific so far.

“The community is rapt with it and it is going to look so different from all the other silos,” he said.

“Because of the curve in the silos, it is going to take Adnate a bit longer to finish the faces. It should be done before Christmas though.”

There will be a community event to launch the mural on Friday.

The Silo Art Trail is funded by the state and federal government and Yarriambiack Shire.

GrainCorp has donated all the silos.

Future silos to be unveiled as part of the trail include Lascelles, Roseberry and Rupanyup and will include work by artists Rone and Julia Volchkova.
