It is big weekend for the side, which will play back-to-back games at home, with Saturday’s game against the Coolac Kookas kick-starting it all. The Hornets will come into Saturday’s clash with a full-strength side full of confidence from an impressive round eight win against the Stawell Wildcats.
The 51-point victory saw the side’s junior players step up and further confirmed the Hornets’ status as one of the top teams in the competition.
The Hornets sit on top of the league ladder, on 22 points, with the Terang Tornadoes and the Corio Bay Stingrays close behind.
The Hornets have had a reasonably consistent season, with seven wins and just one loss. The side cemented a comfortable 15-point victory against the Kookas in round three. The Kookas currently sit in seventh position on the ladder.
Sunday’s game could present more of a challenge for the Hornets. The side lost 69-61 to the Lakers in round four. Hornets coach Cam Bruce said he was looking forward to seeing what his team could do.
“Sunday will be a big test for us as the Lakers are always the team to beat,” he said.
“They knocked us off earlier in the season so it will be great to have another go.
“They are a relatively tall side so we will need to play to our strength with our speed.”
LADIES
INJURIES could affect crucial Lady Hornets clashes at the weekend.
Captain Annie Brack and guard Shannon Reinheimer are confirmed outs after suffering serious injuries.
Brack has suffered a stress fracture in her foot, which will see her sidelined for the season, while Reinheimer has a broken thumb.
Ella Bibby is unavailable.
The side will face the Kookas on Saturday before going head-to-head with the Mt Gambier Lakers on Sunday.
Lady Hornets coach Gareth Hiscock said the side was comfortable in its current position but injuries and potential unavailability of players could cause issues for the team.
“It is not ideal, especially at this point in the season,” he said.
“We have five big games in the next three weeks.
“Having our tall players injured and unavailable leaves us pretty exposed, so we will certainly have our work cut out for us.”
Saturday’s men’s game will be played at 8pm while the ladies will start at 6pm.
On Sunday, the men will play at 2pm while the ladies match will tip off at noon. Both games are at Horsham Basketball Stadium.
