MORE than 200 people attended a traditional Aboriginal earth oven recreation event called Bakang Dykata on the banks of the Wimmera River in Horsham from November 18 to 19.

The event was inspired by La Trobe University PhD student Maurizio Campanelli’s discovery of an earth oven and clay-ball heat retainers at Clear Lake.
The earth oven was later found to date back more than 11,000 years.
Three earth ovens were recreated for the event using traditional materials and food samples were cooked over the two days for people to taste.
Participants enjoyed a Welcomed to Country from Wimmera elders on both days, and the Wotjobaluk dancers performed a smoking ceremony and traditional dances. Attendees came from across Australia.
