The old year is behind us and a new year has begun, and no matter where we are at in life, our journey from the cradle to the grave offers us a myriad of different experiences that allow and challenge us to grow. Whether those experiences are good or bad, the opportunity is for us to become better people and not bitter people.

We have just celebrated another Christmas.
Whatever you may think of Jesus, isn’t he the ultimate and perfect model of every person?
The world has never known a heart so pure, and a character so flawless. His love and mercy was so rich, he never missed a chance to forgive. A bad thought never entered his mind. He never spoke a lie. No distraction ever interrupted his vision. He reached out to touch and heal, when others backed away in horror. He persisted when others gave up. He always looked for opportunities to welcome and help others.
Wouldn’t you like to grow to become a bit more like that.
Jesus felt no guilt – he came into the world to take care of yours.
Jesus had no bad habits – he wants to help you to get rid of yours.
Jesus had no fear of death – he wants to take away whatever fear you may have of dying.
He had time for every person, and kindness for every illness or need. He had mercy even for the rebellious, and offered hope for those challenged by their circumstances or situation in life.
He wants every one of us to have the same.
God always rewards those who seek him and a relationship with him. We are told that: ‘as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him’ – that is, Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Could you ever think of a greater gift than to become better people? To become more and more like Jesus.
Why not make it your goal to grow and become a better person this year?
A person who seeks to keep cool and remain patient in difficult times. Someone who has time for others and is forgiving; who is determined to respond well, even when treated harshly.
For inspiration to become a better person, spend some time reading the gospel stories in the New Testament of the Bible – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. In them you will learn what Jesus was like.
Happy growing during 2017, and a blessed New Year to you.
