Fiedler said the 44 pound Mulloway was the third biggest he had caught.
“My biggest was 70 pounds and I’ve had a 65 pund one as well,” he said.
The fish was caught on a salmon bait using a Black Magic Gummy Snatcher rig.
He said that it was lucky it didn't get away as it had pulled the rod into the water.
“That’s why people like trying to catch them, they are a very strong fighting fish,” he said.
“It’s such a thrill when you hook one.”
With the rod submerged his brother Brenton dived in with him into the surf and managed to grab it just in the time before it disappeared all together.
The desperate measures cost a couple of hats and sunglasses but both agreed it was worth it when the big fish was landed.
