Jahryn, 8, started growing his hair in May to raise money for Cancer Council Victoria.
The fundraiser came after his grandmother Bev Martin died from breast cancer in July 2014, and his grandfather Brian Martin died from stomach cancer in November, 2015.
Jahryn’s mother Kellie Martin said her son’s hair had now grown past his shoulder blades.
“It has been difficult in the hot weather, but he hasn’t complained at all – he’s doing so well,” she said.
The fundraiser has almost reached $3000.
Ms Martin said Jahryn had help from the community.
She said staff at his school, Horsham’s Ss Michael and John’s Primary School, raised money with a morning tea.
“The church had an extra collection, which raised about $700,” she said.
“Horsham Saints Cricket Club had a high tea and raffle that raised about $770.”
Ms Martin said it was great to have the community’s support.
“They all contacted me about wanting to help,” she said.
Jahryn’s campaign will end on February 28.
However, he isn’t ready to get rid of all his hair yet.
“He isn’t going to totally cut it off, just shorten it so it’s easier to manage,” Ms Martin said.
“It took him so long to grow it that he doesn’t want to get rid of it yet.”
Ms Martin said it was great to see young children getting behind good causes.
“Jahryn talks to his friends about it and one of his friends donated her pocket money,” she said.
Fundraising runs in the family and Jahryn’s older brother Tadgh also wants to grow his hair to raise money for cancer research.
“We are going to wait a year though and then it will be his turn,” Ms Martin said.
She said people could still donate money to Jahryn’s fundraiser online at https://my-own-way-2016.everydayhero.com/au/jarhyn-mcgrath.
