The Redbacks have not had a team in the league in more than 15 years.
President Donna Dunmore said the time is right to get a team going again.
“I know I can get the players, but that is not what I am concerned with,” she said.
“It is the off court support staff that we will need to find.
“The four people for the score bench, people to wipe the floors, all the people to do the media stuff and things like that.”
Five Ararat basketballers played for the Stawell Wildcats in the 2016-17 season.
Dunmore said she is confident the basketballers will play for Ararat if the Redbacks go ahead with a team.
We have discussed it before, it has always coincided with our junior tournament but there are a few players moving out of the under-18s into the senior ranks,” she said.
“So if we do not get the team going, they will not have anywhere in Ararat to continue playing basketball.”
I know I can get the players
- Donna Dunmore
Dunmore said she is excited to give Ararat basketballers another opportunity to continue playing.
"I just really want to see the Ararat players playing for Ararat rather than Stawell or other teams,” she said.
“But we need commitments from everyone now, if we are serious and start training, then I have no doubt we can be competitive against the other teams.”
Ararat’s Dom Didomenico was one of the players who played for the Wildcats but said he was excited at the prospect of playing for the Redbacks.
“It would be really good if it does happen, I would much prefer to play for my home team than travel to Stawell each week,” he said.
"When it comes to training during the week, playing for Ararat and training there would make it a lot easier because sometimes I have to work late.”
Players will discuss the proposal to reform senior Ararat Redbacks men’s and women’s teams at the Ararat Fitness Centre on February 27.
The meeting will be in the upstairs room at the centre and it will start at 7pm.
