The challenge you face in the Grampians is not finding a walk, but choosing which one to explore first. 

Stretching over more than 1600 square kilometres, the Grampians National Park is renowned for its sandstone mountain ranges, which offer stellar views of the plains surrounding it. 

Slightly off the beaten track, Mt Zero offers a view south back towards the remainder of the National Park and Mt William as well as the fertile plains to the north and east. 

Directly below, you can see the ordered olive groves as they spread, farm lands and distant peaks. 

To get to this vantage point, it is an approximately 2.8km walk on a medium grade across sections of boardwalk and then up a signposted track onto the hillside. 

The track has rough sections that may offer difficulties for people with balance difficulties. 

If you are looking for a bit of adventure, larger boulders and cliff areas offer to chance to navigate a narrow passage up a section of the climb. A great little hike for young people of an appropriate age, they will love scrambling for footholds over the rough rock areas. 

The top offers incredible views over the Grampians and region. Make sure you have packed a camera because there is plenty to capture. 

There are no railings in this area and there are areas of extreme drop off, so if you were planning to take young children, they will need to be very closely supervised.

On the return, the base of the walk offers a picnic area for rest and relaxation and there are more large rockfaces to be explored on the opposite side of the road from Mt Zero. 

Make it a stop or the site of a full day’s entertainment. Mt Zero is a top location to take in the vistas and glories of the Grampians and the Wimmera.

HOW TO GET THERE: Mt Zero can be accessed from the Mt Zero Road, 19km north of Halls Gap, 50km south of Horsham and about 40km from Stawell (depending on the route chosen).
