Andrew Broad spoke about telecommunications and detailed the federal goverment’s program to reduce mobile phone blackspots. He also discussed the various issues surrounding the roll-out of the NBN.
What I found of interest is a proposal to have a national roaming scheme so that mobile phones will be serviced by the closest tower regardless of which provider you use.
This would close up a lot of the blackspot areas where there is no service if you are with a different provider.
However, this would require an agreement between all the providers, who may or may not agree with the proposal.
Over the past month, three community events were held in the West Wimmera Shire.
The Kaniva car and bike show attracted a large number of entries, covering most of the football oval.
The owners are very proud of their vehicles, spending a fair bit of time using their polishing cloths. A good crowd was in attendance.
Henley on Lake Wallace is a long established event held in Edenhope each year.
It begins with a street procession highlighted by some local floats that pick a satirical theme each time to entertain the crowd.
Then on to the park by the lake where they had stalls of various types and entertainment for all ages.
The crowd this year was the largest seen for many years.
The day concluded with a very impressive fireworks display over the lake.
With the lake at high water levels it seemed to recreate an atmosphere from times past.
The country music festival at Lake Charleygrark was also well attended.
The weather was cold but it did not dampen the enthusiasm of those who love this type of music.
Caravans packed the camping areas, and nearby property, with people travelling large distances to attend.
It is hoped that funding will be secured to upgrade the amenities and power facilities in time for next year’s event.
Thousands of hours of voluntary labour make these events possible and bring benefits to various communities.
