Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia.
The Ararat Prostate Cancer Support Group includes men with prostate cancer and their families, who meet on the third Wednesday of every second month.
Every second month at Ararat RSL a small group of men and their families meet to share their stories and support each other through the difficult time.
The group also hosts health and cancer experts as guest speakers to members can receive the support they need as they battle the disease.
Organiser Mervyn Fox said men who were diagnosed often had no knowledge of prostate cancer.
“I have been called up at 7.30am to go see a bloke who has just been diagnosed with cancer,” he said.
“We put them on the right track, send them to doctors and give them lot of books about treatment.”
Mr Fox said the support group helped men and their families meet with people who were having the same experience.
The group’s next meeting will be on April 17 at the Ararat RSL at 12pm.
