Development manager Jason Muldoon said the competition needed at least 25 to 30 players.
“We are pretty confident we will get to that amount of participants,” he said.
The competition aims to cover a shortfall because Horsham and District Football Netball League is not hosting an under-12 competition.
“We just want to make sure we aren’t missing out on those players,” Muldoon said.
This competition is for players under the age of 12 from January 1, 2017.
An under-12 competition operated several years ago and AFL Wimmera Mallee is now revisiting the idea.
“We have had a good response so far,” Muldoon said.
“But we still need more to start it up.”
The competition would start on April 28.
Numbers participating at under-14 level has dropped in recent years – especially for players that are 10 to 12 years old. This competition will create a concrete foundation for young players to start their footballing careers.
“This gives players the opportunity to play against someone their own size,” Muldoon said.
Young footballers do not need to be registered with a club and AFL Wimmera Mallee will run the competition.
The games will be played on reduced ovals with Muldoon hoping it would include 10 players per side in a match.
Each contest includes 15-minute quarters, with the proposed starting time at 5pm and the competition ending just after 6pm at the Horsham College oval on Dimboola Road.
“Parents can come and pick their kids up, get some fish and chips and be home just in time to watch some Friday night footy,” Muldoon said. “If they do play club footy it won’t interfere because it is on Friday.”
Muldoon said people could email him at jason.muldoon@afl.com.au for more information.
