Home fans could only watch as their side went from 16 points in front at three-quarter-time to 11 points down at the final siren.
Donald coach Tom Bell said the 10.13 (73) to 9.8 (62) loss was disappointing.
“We dominated possession for most of the day but left the door ajar for them at they jumped through,” he said.
“There was five minutes at the end when they just got on top and had the momentum.
“Our midfielders were buggered at the end and Wedderburn opened us up through the middle.”
Donald opened up a 22-point lead in the first quarter before Wedderburn clawed back to within 9-points at half-time. A strong third-quarter opened up the advantage again before the final quarter fade.
Bell said it was about composure.
“The ability is certainly there, the endeavour is there it’s just the composure we were missing,” he said.
“We missed some simple chances and we were rushed across the ground.
“That is also credit to Wedderburn’s players though as they applied good pressure.”
St Arnaud v Boort
A YOUNG Saints team could not hold on in the last quarter to secure an opening win of the season against Boort on Saturday.
The side led at every siren except the last when the scoreboard showed Boort as 17.13 (115) to 14.6 (90) winners.
Saints coach Jason DeGraff said he saw plenty of signs of improvement during the game.
“We played two quarters in round one and three quarters this week so maybe we will play four quarter next week,” DeGraff said.
“Our endeavour was fantastic but just need to play out the full four quarters.”
Eager to impress, the Saints side jumped out of the blocks in its first home game of the season to lead by 13 points at the first break.
Boort chipped away at the lead in the second quarter and the task was made more difficult for the Saints when it had to play the last half with only one player on the bench.
With less rotations and key position players town Boort eventually outran the home side to record the 25-point win.
DeGraff said the first home game of the season was positive for the club with many senior and junior players staying for presentations.
“Obviously we just did not get the result we wanted on the field,” he said.
