The West Wimmera water channel system was the first in Australia, in about 1890, and meetings were held regularly at Mildura. In those days people living in the Quantong area had to go by train - Quantong to Ballarat and then to Mildura. Fresh fruit was sent to various areas; most grapes were dried before being delivered to the shops, he said.
His family bought a property at Brimpaen, which started their involvement in the dairy industry.
