It comes after reports of a huge Nick Cave mural in Warracknabeal surfaced on music websites last week.
The international musician was born in the Wimmera town in 1957.
In 2008, Cave pushed for a bronze statue of himself to be built in Warracknabeal.
Mr Campling said incorrect media reports of a mural dedicated to the singer were now doing the rounds online.
He said the false reports included rumours that council had proposed a mural honouring Cave at the town’s tourist information centre.
He said the mural would apparently be 20 feet long and 20 feet high.
Mr Campling said the reports followed ongoing rumours that council would build a statue of Cave in the town.
“Every three or four years, the idea of a Nick Cave statue comes up again,” he said.
“We are a small rural municipality and we don’t have the money to create anything like this.
“There is no proposal and council isn’t planning to do anything.”
Mr Campling said they were happy to hear from Cave himself. “If he wants to put in a proposal, we would consider it and maybe even look at waiving planning fees,” he said.
Mr Campling said ideas of a mural and a statue were put forward by community members years ago.
“One group searched for a grant to do a statue, however, the idea never got much support,” he said.
“We’ve had Olympic athletes and AFL footballers come out of Warracknabeal that would be just as worthy of a mural.”
Mr Campling said the shire honoured Cave in their own way. “We have done things to acknowledge Nick already,” he said.
“We have signs at the entrances to Warracknabeal to let people know the town is Nick’s birthplace.
“Also at the tourist information centre there is a plaque acknowledging him.”
Warracknabeal Arts Council put up the signs last year.
