After the birth of her daughter Scarlett in 2014, Ms Tuohey weighed 145.8 kilograms and knew she had to do something.
Ms Tuohey said her weight had been a deep struggle.
“You don’t realise how much easier things are until you’ve lost the weight,” she said.
“It was hard to lose it, but it’s surprising what you can do if you put your mind to it.”
Ms Tuohey’s ultimate goal was to become a zumba instructor. “I wanted to better myself,” she said. “I started to change my eating habits and I started exercising.”
In April last year, she made the life-changing decision to have a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
“It was a huge decision because it was going to change everything, but it’s a decision I would never take back,” she said. “I then reached my goal weight and it’s been a complete lifestyle change.
“I can finally run around after my daughter.”
Ms Tuohey now weighs 59.7kg and she teaches zumba in Horsham on Wednesday nights.
“It’s my happy hour – it’s good to get up there and see everyone’s smiles,” she said.
“I was doing zumba at 145 kilograms and there were things I couldn’t do, but as the weight came off, I was slowly finding it easier.
“I can relate to the people who take my class because no matter what stage they are at, I’ve been there.
“It’s been a three year journey and it has changed my whole life.” Ms Tuohey encouraged other people to believe in themselves when trying to lose weight.
“I have so much more energy and zest for life now,” she said.
Ms Tuohey hopes to start zumba classes for children in June. She said people could find out more on her Facebook page – Zumba Fitness with Sara.
