Art is … Festival Director, Paul Kooperman, said the focus this year is to develop a co-creative festival that builds and empowers the community.
“We’ve wanted the community to have a say about everything we do. We wanted to organise a festival that the community is interested in rather than what we want to show them,” said Mr Kooperman.
‘The Point’ project is just one event that gets the community involved where they have been asked to drop off three pieces of hard rubbish for artist, Nichola Clarke to up cycle into an amazing sculpture.
“There will be lots of free family events throughout the festival with up to five events planned for each day,” said Mr Kooperman.
Mr Kooperman said ‘Family of Footprint’ is an example of a great family event with the interactive exhibition inviting families and friends to put their footprint in the sand to then be photographed and collated for an online exhibition.
The Art is … festival always has new acts each year.
“When we get performers from Melbourne or interstate we always try and get them to perform with locals,” said Mr Kooperman.
While promoting community involvement, the Art is … festival wants to enliven new spaces throughout Horsham.
Mr Kooperman said his top three events for the 2017 Art is … festival is ‘Archie Roach’, on Saturday June 10, ‘Art Play Sunday’, on Sunday June 4, and ‘Move On’, which is from Saturday, June 10 until Sunday, June 11.
‘Move On’ is a community art project where over a series of workshop a mechanical moving masterpiece will be created by the community under the direction of Jans Altheimer, Mandy Field, Sam Deal and local artist Dave Jones.
The Art is … festival has a variety of events planned for both children and adults with plenty free entry activities organised.
The official opening is on Friday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm followed by the opening show ‘A Coal Miner’s Daughter’ at the Town Hall and ‘Art After Dark’ at the Horsham Regional Art Gallery.
