Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove talked with the students via a Skype internet video call.
“What has been your favourite event so far,” a student asked.
Sir Cosgrove replied that his favourite events involved meeting meeting people who have done great things.
“Investitures happen twice a year, where you present people with medals,” he said.
“That’s a happy time. These people are by and large normal people in the community but they have done wonderful things.
“Somebody saw them, wrote a letter about them and a committee decided that they should get a medal.”
Sir Cosgrove also answered questions on why he had wanted to become the Governor General, what he felt his most important role was and whether he liked working with the Queen.
Horsham Primary School principal Chris Walter said the students drew up questions to ask during the call.
“The Governor General’s office were offering a 15-minute Skype session,” Mr Walter said.
“We jumped at the chance and from there it was an opportunity for our kids to ask questions and learn more about the Governor General’s job and more about him.
“We didn’t get through all the questions but the Governor General answered them brilliantly.
“It was a really good opportunity and we were privileged to be involved.”
Mr Walter said the students were interested in all the travel Sir Cosgrove did and his previous career in the Australian Defence Force.
“A lot of things caught the students’ attention like when he talked about plane travel and how many events he did.
“There was a question around whether he felt any pressure in the job and I think the kids really appreciated how he answered it.
“He talked about his old job in the Army and having to make life and death decisions but he had an important job now but didn’t have to make the same decisions.”
