About eight people attended a community ‘conversation’ at Hindmarsh Shire’s Nhill Council Chamber last month regarding the proposed skate park.
Hindmarsh Mayor Debra Nelson said it was a cold night, which seemed to deter many community members, but the idea of a skate park was “well received”.
“It’s certainly something the youth of the town would like and the youth council,” Cr Nelson said.
“The preferred option is to have it fairly close to town.”
She said the council had run “a number of consultations” with Nhill youth to determine the most appropriate location and style for a new skate park.
Cr Nelson said consultants had identified and researched four potential locations for the skate park, but the preferred location was “across the road from the Farmer’s Arms Hotel”.
“It would be a fantastic spot and is reasonably close to public toilets for kids and is close to the shops for them to get a drink.”
Cr Nelson said the site was also near a park, which meant parents could supervise older children from a distance.
She said the need for a new skate park was identified during the development of last year’s Nhill Community Precinct Plan and Hindmarsh Shire’s Sport and Recreation Strategy.
The council received funding for similar projects at Dimboola and Rainbow last year.
