BirdLife Australia’s cockatoo recovery project co-ordinator, Kerry Gilkes, said 810 red-tails were counted across south-western Victoria and south-east South Australia. Last year’s tally was 901 birds.
Despite the lower number of cockatoos counted this year, Ms Gilkes said it was unlikely the population had suffered a significant decline.
“It’s more likely the birds were simply missed,” she said. Red-tails were sighted near Casterton, Goroke, Edenhope, Harrow, Dergholm, Nelson, Lucindale, Frances, Coonawarra, Nangwarry, Heywood, Wattle Range, Naracoorte and Tarpeena.
Only one flock of more than 100 birds was recorded, which was east of Edenhope.
Ms Gikes said anyone with more than 50 red-tails on their property should call the recovery team on 1800 262 062.
