The Horsham rider finished on top of the 15-and-over rankings after the final tournament of the Australian Skatepark League in Hamilton in May.
Bates said he had not expected to do so well.
“I was just going to a few competitions around Victoria because I enjoyed it so much,” he said.
“I was second going into Hamilton. Doing well there got me into first.”
Bates finished on 136 points for the season, nine more than Brad Dickinson in second place and 36-clear of third-placed Ken Le.
There was 31 other riders in the competition and the win means Bates will progress to the next stage of competition later in the year.
He has been riding for four years. “My favourite trick to do is a flair,” he said. “That’s when you do a backflip and spin 180 degrees. I’ve hurt almost every part of my body but I haven’t broken any bones yet.”
