Giants coach Shaun Monohan said his team took advantage of a two to three-goal breeze and kept the Rams scoreless in the opening term.
“After quarter time, they made it hard for us. They really contested the ball,” Monohan said.
And made it hard, they did – the Rams allowing the Giants to add just one goal to their tally in the second stanza.
Both scored five goals apiece during the third term before the Giants kicked on to victory.
Midfielder Lou White and centre-half back Sam Weddell were standouts for Monohan. Nine players shared the scoring opportunities – Kain Robins leading the way with three.
Monohan said accuracy in front of goal arose as an issue to work on, moving forward.
The Giants kicked 16 goals, 19 behinds to eventually take the game by 64 points.
The Rams scored 8.3.
Rams coach Sam Anson put a challenge to the Giants throughout Saturday’s match with good support from Simon Mentz and Callum Cameron.
“Sam Anson was a real standout. He’s just a good footballer and he carries his blokes along with him,” Monohan said.
The Rams hosted the game at Horsham City Oval as a nod to their historic connection to Horsham United prior to amalgamation.
Monohan said the team enjoyed having a run on the smaller ground.
It is the Giants’ ninth win for the season.
Their run of consecutive wins stretches to Horsham District league’s round one of 2016 when the club debuted from the now defunct Mallee league.
They host Edenhope-Apsley at Birchip in round 10 amid reunion celebrations from its long history.
“(Edenhope-Apsley) troubled us both times we played them last year, so we expect a pretty tough game,” Monohan said.
