Boort led 36-0 after the first quarter but had only extended its lead by a further three points when the game finished 15.15 (105) to 10.6 (66).
DeGraaf said Boort had the wind in the first quarter and made the most of it.
“It was probably a four-goal breeze,” he said.
The young side dug deep after quarter time to fight the match out and take it to the a side that is equal-second on the ladder.
Caleb Bloomer and Daniel London led the way for the side as it worked its way into the contest.
DeGraaf praised Josh McDonald’s work in the ruck against James Orr.
“Orr is obviously a very good ruckman and Josh did well against him,” he said.
“It wasn’t just in the ruck duel, it was also around the ground.”
Nicholas Myers played a big role for the team after playing under-16s football earlier in the day.
The margin had extended to 45-points with a quarter to play but the Saints managed to close the margin to less than 20 in the final quarter.
“If we could have kicked another couple it would have been interesting,” DeGraaf said.
“We had our chances but coming from six goals down early is not easy.”
After the game he told his team how good it was to see them fight the way they did.
“I said to them that there are a lot of bottom teams around Victoria who would have been blown away, and would have lost by 80 or 100 points,” he said.
“After quarter time it was a real group effort to make sure we played it out.”
Donald v Wedderburn
THE Royal Blues moved up one position to fourth on the North Central Football League ladder after a win against Wedderburn on Saturday.
Despite some wayward goalkicking, Donald won 7.20 (62) to 5.7 (37) on the road.
The side had plenty of opportunities in the first quarter but could only manage one goal and eight behinds.
It was a similar situation in the third quarter when the side managed one goal and six behinds. All that separated the two sides at the final break was the 11 extra behind Donald had kicked.
Wedderburn only managed one point in the final quarter as the Royal Blues recorded win number six for the season.
