June has been a most enjoyable month for Horsham Rural City Council. It was a pleasure to be at Laharum Flower Farm for the announcement of funding to double the shed and fridge area of the plant providing 50 new jobs for the region.

Many of the new roles will be filled by Karen people. This business is such an asset to our region and we welcomed the announcement by Danielle Green, Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Development, who also announced funding from the Roads to Market program for the extension of road to service the business and all the businesses and homes that use Winfields Road. There will be many more trucks using the road, hence the importance of making it usable, especially in the winter months.
I also had the great privilege of speaking at the celebration of 100 years of Lions International. Service clubs are such an important part of our community, as they do so much in supporting important projects and people within our community.
One of the best things I get to do as a mayor is to welcome people into our Australian family. When they are announced as Australians citizens, we can see the pride on their face. I had the honour of welcoming 15 new citizens earlier this month and look forward to watching them continue to thrive in our great community.
The latest project from Art Is has seen the magnificent transformation of an ugly brick wall on the southern side of Coles into a wonderful piece of street art. The young people involved and the Art Is committee should be thrilled with the outcome.
Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Horsham East for the success of its 40th Art Fair. Being a member of this Rotary club, I know the enormous amount of work and commitment it takes to run a show like this.
All money raised this year will be going to purchase an oncology chair and last year’s funds went to Rachel's Wish. The club’s commitment to the Wimmera Health Care Group and the ongoing medical needs of the community has been strong from the beginning of the fair 40 years ago.
Last week, we had very productive meetings with Jacinta Allan, Victoria’s Public Transport Minister, and Darren Chester, federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, discussing the return of passenger rail to Horsham and Hamilton. More details to come on this exciting project as our advocacy campaign progresses.
