Hindmarsh Shire Council will substitute the cup holiday on November 7 for Nhill show day on October 19, and Rainbow show day on October 17 for respective residents.
Dimboola and Jeparit residents will observe the Melbourne Cup public holiday on cup day.
Councillors voted at a meeting on Wednesday to write to the Small Business Minister with council’s preferences.
Council’s acting corporate services director Monica Revell said council had voted on the public holiday earlier this year, but a report contained incorrect show dates.
It listed Rainbow Show for October 10, and Nhill Show on October 12.
The Nhill holiday will affect Broughton, Yanac, Netherby, Lorquon, Nhill, Glenlee, Kiata and Gerang Gerung.
Rainbow, Albacutya and Kenmare are affected by the Rainbow show holiday.
Councils have been able to request alternative public holidays for Melbourne Cup day for the past six years.
Hindmarsh Shire Council has successfully applied to the state government to substitute Rainbow and Nhill holidays since 2012, because their shows fall on weekdays.
Dimboola and Jeparit shows are on weekends.
