RELATED: Netball numbers remain strong
CLUB representatives have welcomed a positive meeting discussing the future direction of sport in the region.
Pimpinio president Danny Hammerston said it was important to protect the longevity of the game.
“We didn’t walk away looking for short-term results. It was great to see every club was looking for a long-term fix,” he said.
“The amount of red tape and pressure on volunteers was a big topic. It’s such a hard job. But I do agree why we have that red tape, it has to happen.
“The question is how can the leagues and AFL help clubs out? Maybe, for example, they could send someone out to a club to do a working with children’s check instead of relying on the clubs to do it.”
Rupanyup president Rodney Weidemann said Monday’s meeting was a positive move.
“From our perspective, the juniors need to be looked at … the junior structure and program,” he said.
“We see that as the most important because they are the future of clubs.”
Mr Weidemann said a discussion around promotion-relegation could be flawed.
“The problem with divisional football is you’re only worrying about the football. You can’t forget about the netball – there isn’t one without the other,” he said.
“I think there might have to be more resources put into volunteers as it’s loading up on us volunteers.”
Wimmera Football League chief commissioner Trevor Albrecht said the meeting was a step in the right direction.
“There was such a broad sector at the meeting (including) councillors from different shires. It shows the small communities want to help their clubs,” he said.
“All the clubs spoke from a level playing field.
“We are at the early stages.”
