Country Fire Authority district 17 operations officer Alfred Mason said crews were called to a house in Milbourne Street about 2.20am.
He said the house was well alight when crews arrived.
“The occupant was home, and woke up to low level of smoke in the house, probably from ceiling half-way down to the floor,” he said.
“He was able to get some personal papers and escape.
“Warracknabeal Fire Brigade attended with three appliances. Crews wore breathing apparatus.”
Mr Mason said crews were on scene for about five hours.
“That was mostly to do with the clean-up. You can put the flames out but you need to then pull things apart and move them because otherwise they will keep burning,” he said.
“Crews were able to contain the blaze to just the house, but unfortunately it is a complete loss – it’s not liveable anymore.
“At this stage the fire is not suspicious, but crews are still working to determine the cause.”
