Natimuk Nursing Home residents Roderic and Babara Sutherland will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday.
Dr Sutherland said the pair met while working at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. “I was a doctor and she was a nurse and we fell in love,” he said.
However, Mrs Sutherland said it wasn’t love at first sight.
“He was just a doctor working on my hospital ward,” she said. “He was a very good doctor though.”
The couple married on August 10, 1957 at Christ Church South Yarra.
The pair moved around due to Dr Sutherland’s work, but soon settled in Natimuk, where he was the sole practitioner at the town’s bush nursing hospital from 1959 until 1988.
They have three children – Bruce, Anne and Ian.
“We’ve had a very lucky life,” Dr Sutherland said.
They celebrated their anniversary with a lunch at the Natimuk Hotel on Wednesday.
