ARARAT claimed their third win of the season by defeating Nhill and as a result moved up to sixth position on the ladder on Saturday.

The home side established an early lead before Nhill came back hard but Ararat managed to hold on for a 16.9 (105) to 14.7 (91) win.

Ararat coach Terry Keilar said he was pleased his side were again rewarded for their efforts.

“We’ve got some key personal back in recent weeks and it’s just nice to get another four points on the board,” he said.

Keilar said his side’s seven goal to two first quarter was the result of playing some of its best football of the season.

“It was great to see everyone hunting in numbers and charging forward,” he said.

“We were encouraging them to try and do that a bit more this week.”

Jake Robinson was key early on in his second senior game back from injury. Jack Ganley also played an important midfield role while Tom Mills continued to provide a big target up forward.

“It was everyone really but those three really set things up for us,” Keilar said.

A 32-point margin at quarter time grew to 41 at half time before Billy Hayes led a fightback for the Tigers.

The Rats managed just one goal in the third and the deficit was reduced to 21 points with a quarter to play.

Early goals in final quarter seemed to seal the deal for the home team but Nhill continued to come hard to close the margin to 14 at the final siren.

Callan Semple kicked six goals for the Tigers and Liam Albrecht was the side’s best on ground.
