Final concept designs have been completed for new skate parks at Dimboola and Rainbow, and the council held 'Drop In' Community Information Sessions in each town. It was wonderful to see the many youth and adults who dropped in to express their excitement at the designs.
Tenders for construction have been advertised and the council looks forward to appointing a contractor for the construction of both parks later next month. Construction is expected to take two to three weeks for each skate park.
A large crowd took advantage of the Open Day at the newly-constructed Nhill Early Years Centre to inspect the premises. Staff and children are eagerly awaiting the move in to the bright, welcoming spaces and outdoor play area that will be a great asset for the community for decades to come. An official opening is being planned.
The facility is a great example of what can be achieved with strong government partnerships with funding from the state and federal government accounting for roughly half the project cost of over $2 million.
The Rainbow Desert Enduro was a huge success with competitors travelling from as far as Darwin and Queensland to compete in the inaugural event. While the wet weather kept some spectators away, it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the racing teams who enjoyed the many challenges and expressed their desire to return.
The Rainbow community is to be congratulated for providing a much-appreciated warm welcome to visitors to town, with volunteers supporting the event with activities including catering to feed the crowds and forming recovery teams to remove broken-down vehicles from the track.
The Essential Services Commission approved Hindmarsh Shire's application for a rate cap variation, satisfied the higher rate cap was needed to manage assets and deliver services in the long-term interests of the community. The council will use the extra revenue to maintain the road network.
The draft budget and council plan have both been approved for public consultation and are scheduled to be adopted late August after public submissions have been considered.
